Ischaemic Heart Disease (also called Coronary Heart Disease).
CHD is a common condition. Over time, a fatty material called atheroma can build up inside the coronary arteries. This process is called atherosclerosis. Eventually, the arteries can become narrow which can restrict oxygen flow to the heart which can result in a heart attack. CHD can develop slowly over time and the symptoms can be different for everyone. Some people don’t know they have CHD before they have a heart attack. Angina is the term used to describe the most common symptoms of CHD which include chest pain, shortness of breath, pain travelling through the body, feeling faint and nausea. The risk factors for CHD include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, being overweight, not doing enough physical activity, family history, age and ethnicity.
